Every year, about 25 million polyurethane foam cans (in short: PU foam cans) are used in many different areas of the building trade in Germany. Used cans are classified as waste requiring special supervision. Therefore, they can neither be disposed of in the household garbage, the containers for building waste, nor via recycling collection systems such as the “Yellow Bag” system in Germany. Nor is combustion permitted, as this would mean the destruction of precious raw materials.
In order to offer the users a possibility for return and recycling and to guarantee a high level substantial recycling, the leading European manufacturers of PU foam cans established PDR in 1993. Due to a convenient, nationwide collection- and return system, PDR has the possibility to cover all PU foam cans sold on the German market, transport them to Thurnau and recycle them substantially including all remaining substance of contents.
